Solar and home batteries are changing quickly in Queensland.
The Federal Battery Rebate has made energy storage more affordable, Ergon’s regional solar feed-in tariff has fallen, new tariffs are offering three hours of free daytime electricity, and Queenslanders are asking tougher questions about installation quality and battery safety.
So, is solar still worth it in Townsville? How much battery rebate can you receive? What size battery should you choose? And will a battery actually keep your home running during a blackout?
Here are straightforward answers to the biggest solar and battery questions Queensland homeowners are asking in 2026.
1. How Much Is the Queensland Solar Battery Rebate in
2026?
The “Queensland battery rebate” most people are searching for is actually the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.
The program provides an upfront discount on eligible batteries connected to a new or existing rooftop solar system. Rather than submitting a separate rebate application, the discount is generally calculated through Small-scale Technology Certificates and applied by the solar and battery retailer.
The important change from 1 May 2026 is that the level of support now reduces as battery capacity increases:
- The first 14 kWh of usable battery capacity receives 100% of the applicable STC factor.
- Capacity above 14 kWh and up to 28 kWh receives 60% of the factor.
- Capacity above 28 kWh and up to 50 kWh receives 15% of the factor.
- Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity can receive battery STCs.
The STC factor from May to December 2026 is 6.8 certificates per eligible kilowatt-hour before the capacity adjustments are applied.
Because STC prices fluctuate, the exact dollar discount can change. The best way to determine your real rebate is to have the battery properly sized and the current STC value calculated at quotation.

2. What Size Solar Battery Is Best for a Townsville
Home?
There is no single battery size that suits every household.
The right capacity depends on:
- How much electricity you use after sunset
- Your air-conditioning consumption
- Whether you have a pool, electric hot water or an EV
- The size and output of your solar system
- Whether blackout backup is important
- Whether your future usage is likely to increase
- Your electricity tariff and export rate
For many homes, the objective is to store enough excess solar to cover evening and overnight consumption without paying for capacity that rarely gets used.
However, battery sizing needs to consider more than one average bill. Townsville homes can have dramatically different energy profiles between mild winter weather and hot, humid summer days.
There is another important reason to get the size right the first time: only one battery STC claim is generally available per premises. Adding more capacity later may not qualify for another rebate if the original system has already received battery STCs.

3. Can I Add a Battery to My Existing Solar System?
Yes. An eligible battery can be connected to a new or existing rooftop solar system.

- Whether AC coupling or DC coupling is the better option

Before choosing a battery, it is important to check that your existing solar system generates enough excess energy to charge it. A large battery connected to a small or heavily shaded solar system may spend too much time sitting partially charged.
4. Is Solar Still Worth It After Ergon Reduced the Feed-
In Tariff?
Yes—but how you achieve the best return is changing.
From 1 July 2026, Ergon Energy Retail’s regional Queensland feed-in tariff fell from 8.660 cents to 6.006 cents per kWh. That is a reduction of approximately 31% in the value of exported solar electricity.

This does not mean solar has stopped saving money. It means using your solar power inside the home is generally more valuable than exporting it cheaply and buying electricity back later at a higher retail rate.
The priorities are increasingly:
- Power the home directly from solar during the day.
- Shift appliances, hot water, pool pumps and EV charging into solar-producing hours.
- Store remaining excess energy in a battery.
- Export only what the home and battery cannot use.
This is why battery storage and intelligent energy management are becoming more important for North Queensland solar owners.
5. Can Townsville Households Get Three Hours of Free
Electricity?
Ergon Energy Retail now advertises Solar Sharer Tariff 12F, which provides participating residential customers with free electricity from 11am to 2pm, up to a maximum of 24 kWh per day.
The offer:
- Requires a smart meter
- Is optional rather than automatic
- Does not require rooftop solar
- Still includes a daily service charge
- Charges normal applicable rates outside the free period
- May not suit households using most of their electricity from 4pm to 9pm

For households with solar, batteries, air-conditioning or electric vehicles, this creates new opportunities—but it needs to be assessed carefully.
For example, depending on the tariff conditions and your battery configuration, it may be possible to charge a compatible battery during cheaper or free periods and use that stored energy later. However, higher rates outside the free window can reduce the benefit if the system and household usage are not managed correctly.
Always compare the entire tariff, not just the words “free electricity”.
6. Will a Solar Battery Keep My House Running During
a Blackout?
It can—but only if the system is specifically designed and configured for backup power.
Standard grid-connected solar usually shuts down during an outage. This protects workers repairing the electricity network from power being exported unexpectedly.
A backup-capable battery system can isolate your property from the grid and supply selected circuits such as:
- Refrigerators and freezers
- Lights and fans
- Internet and communication equipment
- Selected power outlets
- Water pumps
- Essential medical equipment
- Appropriately designed air-conditioning loads
Some systems provide backup to selected essential circuits, while others can support most or all of the home. Whole-home backup requires careful assessment of the battery’s output, inverter capacity and the starting demand of large appliances.
Solar does not automatically recharge every battery during an outage either. If extended blackout protection is important, ask whether the proposed system can continue operating and charging from solar while disconnected from the grid.
That distinction can make a major difference during a prolonged North Queensland storm or network outage.
7. Are Home Batteries Safe?
A compliant, properly designed battery installed by qualified professionals should be a safe and reliable part of the home.
However, installation quality matters enormously.
The Clean Energy Regulator’s national inspection results reported that 0.83% of inspected battery installations were rated unsafe. A further 62.45% were considered technically substandard, although safe to remain operating.
“Substandard” does not necessarily mean the battery was about to catch fire. It can include technical, documentation, protection or labelling issues. But the figures clearly show why homeowners should avoid choosing an installer solely because they offered the cheapest quote.
A quality battery installation should include:
- An approved battery and compatible inverter
- Correct clearances and positioning
- Appropriate impact, weather and fire protection
- Compliant cabling, isolation and labelling
- A licensed and appropriately accredited installer
- Proper commissioning and testing
- Clear operating and shutdown instructions
- Reliable local after-sales support

This is not an area where saving a few dollars upfront should outweigh workmanship, compliance and long-term support.
8. Can a Solar Battery Eliminate My Electricity Bill?
A well-designed solar and battery system can dramatically reduce grid electricity purchases, but nobody should promise that every electricity bill will disappear.
You may still have:
- Daily electricity supply charges
- Higher seasonal air-conditioning consumption
- Cloudy or wet-weather periods
- Battery charging and conversion losses
- Controlled-load charges
- Occasional grid imports
- Export limits
- Tariff charges that vary by time of day
The best results come from matching the solar array, inverter, battery and tariff to the property’s real usage.
Some households may prioritise the fastest financial return. Others place more value on blackout protection, energy independence or protection against future electricity price increases. The correct system depends on what success looks like for you.
9. Do I Need Three-Phase Power for a Larger Solar and
Battery System?
Not necessarily.
Ergon Energy Network’s Dynamic Connections can allow some single-phase properties to install larger combined solar and battery systems without immediately upgrading to three-phase power.
Under an approved dynamic connection, certain configurations may allow up to 10 kVA of solar inverter capacity plus additional battery inverter capacity. The exact allowance depends on the equipment, whether a hybrid inverter is used, network capacity and Ergon approval.
Dynamic exports allow the network to adjust export limits according to local conditions. This can help more homes connect larger systems while protecting the electricity network.

What Should You Do Before Buying Solar or a Battery?
Before signing a contract, ask the installer to explain:
- How the recommended system size was calculated
- Your expected solar self-consumption
- How much energy the battery can actually deliver
- Whether blackout backup is included
- Which circuits will operate during an outage
- The expected warranty and battery lifespan
- Whether the battery is eligible for current STCs
- Who provides local warranty and technical support
- What happens if the system develops a fault
- Whether your network connection has been assessed
